As a homeowner, it is important to make sure that you are doing everything you can in order to keep the home free of all electrical issues because of how much risk there is for a fire. Should you experience any of the following things, you will want to get in touch with a licensed electrician. Remember, just because someone says they know how to do electrical work, does not mean that they are truly qualified to do the work. So while neighbors and friends might have the best of intentions, you will want to call in a professional for the following issues:
The Lights Keep Flickering
If this is a problem that is only occurring in one room of your home, you might just need to tighten the light bulbs. Believe it or not, the smallest of vibrations throughout the house, caused by heavy walking or passing traffic, can cause the light bulbs to loosen. However, if the flickering of lights is something that is happening throughout the entire structure, you have an urgent need to set an appointment with a reputable electrician. There could be a major problem with the wiring inside of the walls, such as frays in the lines. Then again, it could be that the breaker box is experiencing some trouble and the breakers need to be replaced or upgraded.
You Feel Heat Coming From The Outlets
Even if this is happening with just one or two outlets, it can be a very serious issue. Whoever installed the outlets might not have done the job correctly. There might be loose wires or there could have been a mouse that chewed through some of them. Regardless, you will want to refrain from having anyone using those outlets until you have a skilled electrician make the necessary repairs. Remember, even though the changing of an outlet may seem simple enough. In theory, it is important to make sure that you are allowing a professional handle it. This is because he or she will be able to spot if there are any problems with the wiring that needs to be repaired.
The Breaker Box Is Giving Off A Smell
Even if it only happens occasionally, you will want to immediately shut down your breaker box by the main breaker if you smell anything coming from it. The problem could be a faulty breaker or bad wiring. Either way, it is a very dangerous situation and you will need to get in contact with an emergency breaker.
